Why the $elect Stays initiative?

  1. Encourage and boost local tourism through making holidays more affordable.
This is achieved by offering locals a 15% saving. The same 15% that would have left our shores had it been paid as commission to an International Booking site.
  2. Reduce the dependancy on large International Booking sites.
This is achieved by building up a loyal following of verified users who we will market to on an exclusive and regular basis to maximise the opportunity.
  3. Ensure more money stays within local tourism to benefit us all.
It is no secret that the large International Booking sites pay no or very little tax to South Africa or Namibia. By taking back a little more control we boost our own economy, and in particular, our local tourism. This is good for us all.
Read this article on how the Australian holiday accommodation sector is suffering in the same way.
  4. Exclusive.
Only listings on Stays can participate, which means less competition for bookings.
How it works for accommodation-seekers:

Terms & Conditions

  1. The property (you) must offer the 15% saving to all verified members
  2. Verification is done automatically at the time of an enquiry. It is at the property’s discretion whether to offer the saving for a telephonic enquiry. (As you have no means to verify the membership number, it is advisable to get them to do a formal enquiry so they can be verified).
  3. If the property is currently running a "Special" greater than 15% then the "Special" price will apply. (No further savings needs to be offered). EXCEPT in the case where the "Special" is lower than 15%. In that case the 15% will apply.
Example: A property offering a 10% discount, must offer an additional 5% discount to valid members - so they get a total 15% saving.
  4. The property must offer valid members the saving all year round. (Properties that pick and chose in which seasons to participate run the risk of being removed from the programme completely. Allowing selective participation defeats the integrity of this initiative).
  5. The property must not inflate the price before the 15% is applied. Prices displayed should be the rack rate. (The official or advertised price of a room).
  6. The property must honour any bookings made while the property was participating as a $elect Stays property.
  7. The property must honour the agreement and the spirit in which the initiative is designed to benefit local tourism.

Save Big with our "15% Commission Back" on $elect Stays properties

International Booking companies are hijacking local tourism. This they do through imposing heavy commissions of 15% or more. This commission does not find it's way into our economy. It starts with keeping as much of our tourism money in South Africa!

Under the name $elect Stays, a group of properties have decided to give YOU the 15% commission instead! This is a real saving! Not in "travel-buks" or "fly-points" or such - but in real money that you can feel in your pocket!

How does it work?

  1. You fill in your details below and generate a membership number

Knysna Elephant Park

The Knysna Elephant Park (est. 1994) was the first facility in South Africa to house and care for orphaned African elephants. Today, it has become a world class facility, having cared for and raised more than forty elephants. These animals include relocated animals, orphaned calves, elephants rescued from culls and ex-circus animals. Some have become part of the resident herd, others have moved onto other reserves and facilities in the Western and Eastern Cape, depending on their personalities, bonds with other animals and welfare needs. The present KEP herd numbers ten - the largest domesticated matriarchal herd in the country. Our style of management offers guests the opportunity to get up close and personal with our elephants, on elephant terms. Responsible and educational interactions allow guests to appreciate the awe-inspiring presence of these animals, but still give the elephants the space and freedom to choose where they want to move, what they want to eat and who they want to interact with. There are no fences to spoil the close encounter and our environment encourages elephants to exhibit natural behaviours. Elephant experiences include Daily Tours (departing from reception every 30 mins), as well as Picnic Breakfast  Elephant Walks, Afternoon Elephant Walks, Sundowner Group Packages, as well as Sleepovers in the Elephant Lodge. No reservations are necessary for daily tours, but bookings are essential for all other elephant encounters. Visitors to the park are privileged to have a personal encounter with our gentle giants, and leave having gained a new-found respect for these animals, as well as a better understanding of the African elephant and its plight across the continent. Most importantly, by visiting the Park and experiencing our elephant herd, guests make a direct contribution to elephant husbandry and care. Visitors to the Park enable us to give our elephants the best possible facilities, nutrition and care. They also allow us to offer other elephants in need the chance of a better life. Facilities include an on-site research unit, volunteer programme, interpretation centre, restaurant and playground, curio shop. The Park is open 365 days a year, from 09h00 to 15h00 daily. ELEPHANT LODGE Sleep-over with elephants The Parks' elephants enjoy world-class facilities: during the day they roam the property, but at the end of the day they hurry back to their boma / night camp for a pampered night's sleep. Built within the elephant sleeping quarters, our Extraordinary Elephant Lodge offers guests the unique opportunity to spend the night with a herd of African elephants. Enjoy your elephant sleep-over in unique accommodation overlooking the boma; or spend the evening relaxing in the communal lounge, watching the elephants browse, feed and snooze... RESTAURANT AND CURIO SHOP Our Elephant Park restaurant serves wholesome meals, with a cozy interior and fireplace for winter or our deck overlooking our dam for summer. Our unique Elephant Curio Shop prides itself in having an extraordinary range of Elephant curios sourced from cottage industry crafters that captures the spirit and love of our elephants! WEDDINGS AND FUNCTIONS Every celebration deserves an elephant's blessing! Our exclusive functions venue is beautifully situated at the edge of indigenous forest and overlooks the mountains. The lapa and chapel accommodates 150 guests. Facilities include a kitchen and vast deck. Our resident herd can pay tribute to your function. Event co-ordinators can assist with all planning. VOLUNTEER PROGRAM We are looking for people who care! Working with elephants is a humbling and awe-inspiring experience. As a volunteer you will contribute to all aspects of elephant research, education, husbandry, and conservation. Our volunteers are directly involved in elephant research and aid in providing information that relates directly to the welfare and management of elephants, not only at KEP, but internationally. Please contact us for further information if you are interested.
